About Us

Under the federal Low-Level Radioactive Waste Policy Act of 1980 (Policy Act), each state is responsible, either on its own or in cooperation with other states, for providing the capacity to dispose of the low-level radioactive waste (LLRW) generated within its borders. The State of Illinois and the Commonwealth of Kentucky joined together in 1984 to create the Central Midwest Interstate Low-Level Radioactive Waste Compact (Compact) which was ratified by Congress in 1986.
